Fellowship of ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ training sites

Accreditation

The Fellowship of ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ (F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ) training program comprises four years (184 weeks) of Basic ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ and two years (92 weeks) of Advanced ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ.

The College accredits all training sites offering F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Basic ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ throughout Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Accredited training sites include:

major public teaching hospitals

outer suburban/peripheral hospitals

rural/provincial hospitals

For the purposes of Basic ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ, a combination of these different training sites forms a consortium, each known as an Integrated ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Program (ITP). Trainees receive a significant proportion of their Basic ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ at a single home/base hospital and rotate to other hospitals in that ITP.

An ITP normally comprises at least two training sites, and includes at least one tertiary hospital and one rural hospital. Collectively, these hospitals must be able to provide trainees with the range of experiences in obstetrics and gynaecology necessary to meet all F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ training and assessment requirements for Basic ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ.

Accreditation standards

The College considers the below standards necessary for the provision of effective training and support for trainees in the F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ training program.

1

Support for ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Officers and engagement with hospital accreditation processes.

2

Appointment and support for training supervisors.

3

Consultant involvement with and support for F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ trainees.

4

Provision of clinical supervision and experience.

5

Provision of structured education programs, teaching sessions and learning opportunities.

6

Workplace culture, registrar staffing, safe working hours, leave arrangements and assistance for rural rotations.

Apply

To apply for initial accreditation as a F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ training site, the hospital must:

1

Complete the following form and submit it to the ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Accreditation Lead at: accreditation@ranzcog.edu.au.

Please note that your application must be supported by the relevant ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ State/Territory/Aotearoa New Zealand ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Accreditation Committee, which must also provide information regarding the Integrated ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Program (ITP) in which the new training site will be included, if accredited.

2

Undergo a site visit by ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ, conducted by:

a Fellow of ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ from another training region

a member of the relevant ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Accreditation Committee

a trainee representative from another training region

one or more senior members of ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ staff

This site visit will involve interviews with a range of O&G department staff, senior midwifery and nursing staff, and hospital management. The visit may also include attendance at morning handover, and tours of department facilities.

Please follow the link below for more information:

Reaccreditation

Hospitals are normally reaccredited within a four-yearly cycle, for periods of six months to three years with provisional accreditation, or four years with full accreditation.

Prior to the end of an accreditation period, the College will arrange a reaccreditation site visit at a mutually convenient time. The aim of this site visit is to ensure that training is being delivered in accordance with the Accreditation Standards and Guidelines.

The format of the reaccreditation site visit is similar to that for initial accreditation.

Please follow the link below for full details of the reaccreditation process:

In-hospital credentialing

F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ accreditation standards require that every hospital training site has a documented credentialing process in place to identify competence for each F·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ trainee in relevant obstetric and gynaecological surgical procedures.

The College has developed a standardised in-hospital credentialing resource for ITPs in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Please follow the link below for more information:

Please note that use of this resource is not compulsory, and hospitals with an existing in-hospital credentialing process may continue to use their own documentation.

The College recommends that credentialing documentation is kept up-to-date and made available to all relevant consultants and nursing staff.

Please follow the link below for accreditation standards and criteria relating to credentialing:

Subspecialty training units

Accreditation

The College accredits all training units offering subspecialty training. A training unit may comprise one or multiple sites. Each unit must nominate a subspecialist program director who will be responsible for overseeing the training program.

During the subspecialty training program, trainees will:

undertake training at a minimum of two accredited training units

spend at least six months (full-time equivalent) in one training unit

Please follow the link below for more information on the role of the subspecialty program director.

·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ unit standards

The College has developed Accreditation Process and Guidelines for Subspecialty ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Units v 3.0, which apply to all five subspecialty training programs.

Appendices to standards

The College has also developed Accreditation Standards and Criteria that apply to training units in each of the five subspecialty training programs.

Please note that these documents are appendices to the Standards for Assessment and Accreditation of Subspecialty ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Units.

Each set of accreditation standards and criteria consists of the eight standards as below:

1

Support for ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ officers and engagement with unit accreditation process

2

Supervision

3

Clinical experience

4

Education programs and activities

5

Facilities

6

Research, publications and presentations

Apply

To apply for accreditation or reaccreditation, training units can obtain the relevant application form by contacting: subspecialtyaccreditation@ranzcog.edu.au.

For reaccreditation, you must submit your application at least three months before the current accreditation period end date.

The relevant Subspecialty Committee will review your application and determine any terms and conditions of accreditation, such as:

maximum number of subspecialty trainee positions

length of accreditation period

requirement for a site visit

Please note that the Committee may also opt to conduct a site visit at any time during the accreditation period to learn more about your training unit, particularly where issues or concerns have been communicated.

Certificate and Procedural training sites

Accreditation

The College accredits all training sites offering the Certificate of Women’s Health (CWH), Associate ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Program (Procedural) (PTP) and Associate ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Program (Advanced Procedural) (APTP).

A hospital or training site offering the Certificate and/or Associate Procedural qualification(s) must meet accreditation and re-accreditation standards set out by the Conjoint Committee for Associate Procedural ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ (CCAPT).

The CCAPT is a tri-partite committee, comprising representatives from ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ, RACP and ACRRM, that oversees CWH, Associate Procedural and Associate Advanced Procedural training.

Through implementation of these standards, the College aims to:

ensure that the core requirements for clinical and educational experience, as defined in each program’s curriculum, are being met for all trainees

assist accredited sites in their role as training providers — not just service providers — by identifying factors that are adversely affecting their capacity to deliver effective and supported training to trainees in each program

work with training sites and the CCAPT to formulate strategies that will maximise training opportunities and ensure efficient and safe service delivery.

For more information, please refer to the Accreditation and Re-Accreditation Standards and Procedures for CWH, PTP and APTP ·ÛºìÅ®ÀÉ Sites.
